"The belief that you can influence events is the ninth step of the 12: Believing that you will succeed has to do with a feature of personality that some psychologists call an internal locus of control. Most people have either an internal or an external locus of control. The external types believe that things happen to them, that others cause their misery, and that they are largely helpless to control events. They adopt the posture of a victim. They tend to complain, to brood, to blame others, and to expect rescue. They do not tend to do well in emergencies nor in the aftermath of trauma.
People whose locus of control is internal believe that they make things happen, and are active in doing so. When they make mistakes, they resolve to do better. When something bad happens, they try to find a way to turn it into an opportunity or at least a lesson for the future. They don't blame. They don't complain. In the worst of times, they're still able to see the beauty in the world, even while refusing to deny that which can harm them. They believe in themselves. They recognize (and are not bothered by) certain things that they can't control. People like that tend to have more skills because they've spent a lifetime developing them. They are capable because they have practiced being capable. They can do things. So when bad things happen, they are more prepared."
